The 22 best sights in Chalong (2024)

The Big Buddha in phu*ket is a 45-meter-tall marble statue located on Nakkerd Hills, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the island. Positioned between Chalong and Kuta Beach, this revered spot provides a 360-degree view of phu*ket Town, Kata Bay, and Karon Bay. The grand statue is made from reinforced concrete and Burmese white jade marble atop a 25-meter base.

If you happen to be in phu*kET then Big Buddha visit is must. It's not about religion but about place to cherish for life. At this place the view of the city is just astounding. We were there on a sunny day and the entire city view was just mind-blowing. I would definitely recommend it to be part of you city tour. Place has a different charm and you feel calm with the entire surrounding. If you are spiritual (which I am not) then you would love to spend longer time at this place.Enjoy your visit to Big Buddha and please share your experience....

This is a cool place with a great view! Annoyingly people fly drones around which spoils the atmosphere. But if you at sunset you can see it in the day and then lit up at night which is beautiful. There is nothing inside, but you can walk around and there are meditation spaces too. They have a dress code of shoulders, belly and knees covered so make sure you’re dressed appropriately. The views over the bay are wonderful too. I recommend spending about 15 min here.

LADIES, TAKE A SHAWL AND A LONG SKIRT OR TROUSERS TO YOUR ANKLES to cover all your skin.Me and my brother hiked 3 hours to get to The Big Buddha. We managed to make it to the bottom of the hill until we had to call a taxi to take us to the top. The hill is very steep and would take a very long time to walk up. Alternatively, you can also take a quad bike up the hill as well. You also pass a tiger park on the way up which allows you to touch the tigers. The view from the top of the mountain was gorgeous, but the clothing standards for women is very strict. LADIES, TAKE A SHAWL AND A LONG SKIRT OR TROUSERS TO YOUR ANKLES to cover all your skin. Otherwise they will make you buy a substitute. This clothing standard does not apply to men. You can get blessed by a monk and there are special places for people to sit and mediate. It was a centring experience despite there being many tourists.

Awesome place, deffo worth to give it a visit. The feeling the temple gives is super peaceful and I had great fun visiting it.The climb up the stairs might have been a little uncomfortable, considering the weather conditions when I visited. There was some real interesting and informing material all around the place, especially down in the temple. Also got blessed by a monk.

Nastia — Google review

A serene experience. The view from the top is amazing and the giant statue makes you feel humbled and privileged to be here. The drive to the top has some amazing scenery and let's you experience Thailand in all its beauty. We took a scooter to the top and that was great fun.I really loved seeing the monks. That was awesome.

Edzard B — Google review

After a long hike (or a quick buggy/motorbike/car ride), which takes you along a windy uphill road, bringing you along cafes with incredible views, you arrive at the Big Buddha. Climb some more steps to get to the top - and you’re there. The statue is much bigger than expected and is fascinating to look at. There are several interesting signs that explain the history of it, provide background facts, more signs that tell you about Buddhism etc. So if you’re in for it, you can even learn something while you’re here. Descending again, you’re led through a prayer room where monks offer a sit down praying session for free. Outside, there’s also a 7-minute meditation session. Really enjoyed all of it. Views are incredible on a sunny and clear day.

The Big Buddha in phu*ket is a breathtaking attraction that captivates with its majestic presence. The colossal statue, standing at 45 meters tall, offers stunning panoramic views of the island. A must-visit destination. However, be prepared for crowds during peak hours and watch out for monkeys 🐒that like to steal your wallet 😁

Very very beautiful temple. Lot to see.I noticed that not many people don't know the dressing rules. But hope they learn. You can fly your drone here, there are specific rules on the gate and green signs where you can set up your drone. Be careful and remember the fly time is 10-15 minutes. Do not fly near any Statue nor people. Enjoy!!- Parking area might be full time to time so then it's very difficult to find car park. Motorbikes have designated area.

Unfortunately there was light fog.It is worth visiting this holy place. It's best in the morning, as there are relatively few tourists at this time. If you're lucky, you can meet monkeys here)

This place was beautiful! Besides the impressive marble Buddha statue overlooking the south of the island, the 360º view is just gorgeous.Away from the city’s hustle and bustle, this place it has such a energy!I’d say to go in the afternoon to enjoy the sunset and the scenic view from the top of the hill.Note:❇️There is a free entry, no need to buy tickets! 🎟️Beware of fraudulent websites and fake agents out there❌.Tip: Be careful with the monkeys over there, they snatch everything from you and can get pretty aggressive 🐵

Irina C — Google review

It was such an amazing experience. I was in so much awe to see The Big Buddha in person. I love how there are posters with informative descriptions about the statue and about Buddhism in Thailand. It wasn’t super crowded when I got there, and they have very helpful staff around. The view from the top is immaculate! On a good day you can see the beach and town.

Shekinah J — Google review

It's a nice place to look at scenery from but it's half-finished, probably due to COVID-19, so lots of rough edges. Quite literally in fact for the steps and pathways which are still rocky and jagged in places.I think the sculptor didn't quite get the face of Buddha right though cos he has a quirky expression on his face that you won't find anywhere else in the world. Probably worth seeing just for that, I suppose.

Yi K — Google review

Get blessings from the monk, make donations, send blessing and requests… other than all the Buddhism goodness, it is quite cooling in shaded areas as it’s on a mountain top.Although parts of the Big Buddha is still under restoration work, it’s the best time to donate and add a marble tile, I’ve made wishes in 2019 and life has been much better even during COViD period. Now I’m back for thanksgiving and to strengthen the faith. Though I’m non-Buddhist.The viewpoint here of all the island … is amazing!!! Very nice for photo taking too!!!

Maddy L — Google review

We attended in low season and it was raining so we did not get the viewings but big Buddha is stunning and impressive nonetheless. It’s free to visit (I know some tours say access to big Buddha is included in their price which is cheeky of them). The only thing that stops it being a five is the lack of information or history to read. We did not have a guide and they didn’t offer a guided tour on site. We googled in the hotel later.Apparently there are “bad monkeys” here which still but we did not see any. Perhaps because it was raining.

Harrison E — Google review

Big Buddha phu*ket is an absolute gem, especially at sunset - the sight is breathtaking! It's a serene and peaceful spot, ideal for spending quality time. Proper attire is a must, but ladies can rent appropriate dresses on-site. Surprisingly, there's no entry fee, making it accessible for all to enjoy this remarkable site.

Jesin J — Google review

Views were beautiful, the surroundings around Buddha wasn't perfect, many constructions, but it's fine.Free entrance, free toilets.A lot of monkeys around. Be aware of them, instantly snatch any food or drink you have.Be aware of taxi mafia, we came up with inDrive (taxi app) for 200 baht, but couldn't find anything who would bring us back down (taxis can't come there, only the local ones), the ones at the place asks 800baht to get you to old town. 😂 we ended up going down the mountain 2km by foot thought forest.

Brigita U — Google review

This is a beautiful religious temple so please be respectful of the dress code before you come and enjoy this spiritual place. The views of the bay and surrounding area are spectacular. Please be aware of the monkeys as they are aggressive and will steal anything you are not holding on to. They are fun to watch.

Rich D — Google review

Arriving at the Big Buddha on a bike was already a delightful experience for me. The winding road leading to the Buddha was incredibly scenic, surrounded by lush trees, and offered glimpses of monkeys and elephants available for rides at a fee offered by locals. There's ample parking near the Big Buddha. I rate the panoramic view of phu*ket from the Big Buddha site as the highest highlight. The view is truly mesmerizing, providing a sweeping sight of almost the entire island. However, one downside is the evident need for some restoration in certain areas; many sculptures seem old and in need of care.

Reg G — Google review

One place you definitely should not miss seeing, it was so peaceful and beautiful to see the Big Buddha and sit meditate for a bit. The chants playing in the background while walking around were soothing to your core. Am so glad we went with the family.Only regret is our elderly parents could not witness what I did as they couldn’t climb up the many steps and no other facilities for them to get up there.

Kleiderordnung ist einzuhalten.(Translated by Google)Nice facility. Beautiful view. Were there around 9:30. We had no waiting times. When we left the place around 10:00, the buses with tour groups arrived there. The cheapest way to get to the sights is with a local transport app. It was cloudy for us. Since the location does not have any significant shade, sun protection should be worn. Free entry. Dress code must be adhered to.

Thomas K — Google review

Drive up hill, once you arrive, there is free parking. Free Entry! Multiple local shops. They will be monitoring if you are dressed (shoulders exposed, knees visible) to enter you will be required to purchase shawl etc. a walk up to the see the big buddah. The scenery is impeccable, you can see the whole city. It was fairly windy up there. The walk way to the exit, you may or may not see monkeys, there are several prayers areas, souvenir options. Also it’s operated via donations. Overall, it took us 30 minutes to see every thing

Mary M — Google review

Really impressive!! We got there by car, parking was very easy although in high season it will probably be harder. Inside you walk up the stairs to the Buddha, take pictures all around, see the amazing views of the whole phu*ket island and then you walk down from the back, see some wild monkeys and end up in a very beautiful temple on the right side of the Buddha. Free of cost, unless you want to buy some souvenirs or give some donation, which in my opinion is a nice thing to do. Must see this impressive statue.

Louis — Google review

A must visit when visiting to phu*ket. It has such good vibes and peace there. The location is at an high altitude and the whole city can be seen from there. There are breathtaking views along with constant breeze. The architecture of it is also great with whole white finish marble. There are multiple small shops, places along with itself.

Smit C — Google review

The Big Buddha is impressive in size, with wonderful views from the observation deck. Parking and toilets are free. There are several stalls with drinks, and even clothes. Shoulders and legs should be covered. You can also buy a skirt and a scarf on your shoulders there for 100-150 baht.

Ossi M — Google review

Is so amazing place is only restricted so cannot go with shirts ,bikini or empty arms . All bidy need have full t-shirt👕 , long shorts or full skirts or dress hide all body. Is security guard there they check people what they wear. People with don't respected this restriction don't be let in

P F — Google review

Our trip to the Big Buddha was stunning! The attraction was not just for Buddhists but a serene and breathtaking view, whether you were looking at the Buddha or away from it.There were interesting quotes from well known persons and under the Big Buddha, there was a temple filled with various representations of Buddha. It is a bit of a drive from phu*ket, so best to engage the services of a dedicated driver. Also dress conservatively otherwise the security will not all allow access.

Baveshree P — Google review

It is a wonderful place to explore. You can get a view of the entire city from the top. I would recommend opting the ATV tour to the big Buddha temple where you can drive along with a captain who would assist you and get back. Overall it’s an hour trip. It’s get slightly crowded but since the place is wide spread you wouldn’t feel the congestion.

Theertha J — Google review

Great place to have a view of the island as well as to watch the sunset. I recommend riding your bike to the top of the hill since it is the most convenient way and the daily rent of a bike is cheaper than taking a taxi both ways.

Ilkin M — Google review

Must visit place! Fantastic view! You can meditate there with an instructor.Get 3 scents by donating and make a wish! You can go see a monk get blessed and get a wish bracelet!A few monkeys up there, they are cute but be aware they can grab your staff :)

Ola A — Google review

The Big Buddha is a must-see if you are visiting phu*ket.Even if you've seen other Buddhas around the world, this one offers amazing 360 views of the entire island and is stunning on a gorgeous day. There are picnic areas where you can bring your own food to enjoy the scenery. Please be respectful and avoid bringing alcohol. There is no entrance fee. Because it's so touristy, it's not difficult to find a Grab to get you to your next destination.

Andy N — Google review

Beautiful and calming place. We went up in the morning and it was very warm. We had a blessing from the monks. I enjoyed it very much. Then sat and ate an icecream while looking down on the monkeys playing in the trees. I took a set of clothes to cover while there ad you have to cover knees and shoulders. You can buy it up there but if your taking a bag then I suggest being prepared.

Gemma H — Google review

The Big Buddha of phu*ket is on a hill top. Can view it from far. Some taxi drivers may not take up your ride as the vehicle can't pull up to the top. Nevertheless the top has superb view and the Big Buddha is so beautiful. It was windy and had a nice chill climate. Enjoyed it even though it was a quick visit. This place has some dress restrictions too. Better not to wear cropped tops or any other revealing clothing. No entry fee.

Archchana G — Google review

It is a must for your bucket list. Such a nice place. It's a Holy place ,so you need a bit of a good dress to visit here. Or you can collect from the shops here. Just not so short dress for girls as it is a holy place for Buddhist people. The view point is so nice that you can see the city in whole. From the top the whole phu*ket looks nice & amazing. You can take pictures & also there are place for saying prayers.

We had a wonderful experience visiting the Giant Buddha during our stay. We appreciated that it was a free activity. We bought a small marble and wrote a note to donate. Seeing the Buddha up close was breathtaking, allowing us to appreciate its size. Unfortunately, the sky wasn't clear when we visited, and it was boiling. However, the most remarkable part of our experience was meeting the monkeys!

Michelle H — Google review

I went here with a small tour group. BEST, BEST,, BEST Monkey encounter ever!!!! The video that I posted was a small portion of our interaction. Too long to describe here. Obviously don't try to feed them! The Buddha itself is Amazing and the atmosphere is Beautiful. You MUST cover up here so bring something in your backpack. The end of the exhibition is good. Carve out time because there is Optional Meditation at the end and a cute Gift Shop. If you are on your own it won't matter time wise, but if you're with a Group it will.

This place has great religious significance from what I felt. The ride to it involves going across a small mountain which can be problematic to those susceptible to nausea. The temple itself has plenty of details to explore. There were little smaller statues at the entrance, leading to a big set of stairs which take you to the big Buddha. My only suggestion is that English translation is made.Overall, visiting this place is a must if you are in Thailand to see the religion backing the kindness of this nation’s people.

Abdullah A — Google review

Even though you have traveled quite far from the hotel where you are staying, once you get there you will be amazed when you see the very large Buddha statue. The beautiful view also spoils the eyes because this place is right at the top of the hill. Apart from seeing the beauty of the Buddha statue, we can also pray here. Remember to dress modestly and cover your body for women and enjoy the beauty of the Big Buddha.

I A — Google review

The scenery below is spectacular. The huge gray-white Buddha statue is dazzlingly majestic. This is a place where you can enjoy truly beautiful scenery. It almost feels like flying. We rode up on our scooters. You can see elephants on the way up and there is also a nice cafe. When you arrive at the entrance, there is a parking lot and a place to sell souvenirs. I bought a hat at a good price here.

EUNSUNG M — Google review

Highly recommend walking there from Karon Beach. It's a hard slog but worth the effort. I would have been a little disappointed if we just drove there as pretty quick stint up the top. Views are amazing and statue is unreal.

Ashley B — Google review

Good place to visit once. Nice scenery on the way . Entry free.Mindful of what you carry. Dress code to be maintained.Monkeys can take away any food items you carry.

Vijai G — Google review

Return here every year! A must see if you haven't already! It's too busy for me during peak season, but beautiful none the less!Easy scooter ride up with plenty of parking. Make sure you wear appropriate clothing as it is still a sacred place.I'd recommend doing the walk or running from the bottom. Well worth the sweat with plenty of cafes to stop at along the way with beautiful views it is quite the experience.I'd recommend going up for sunrise or sunset to avoid the heat.

Dylan M — Google review

The visit to big Buddha was easy and fast. We had a car so need to anyone. The driving is easy and short. Lots of people just admiring the site and views than the Buddha. It looks unfinished, lots of construction material around, the views are better from a lower point of the hill. All the same items sold everywhere you find it here. Maybe in 100 years time it would be more meaningful.

Nelson C — Google review

Must visit place. If you are riding by your own vehicle, try to visit as early as possible. You can also join tours, which will include a few more nearby places.Drone will give you exclusive footage of the place and surrounding.

Rahil P — Google review

I was here recently. Very very quiet and beautiful location. Try to go here in the evening as the weather is very hot during the day. I really like this place. I can't describe it in words. If you come to Thailand, I recommend going here if you need to and watch the sunset.👉Free entry no need to buy tickets👈🎟️Beware of fraudulent‼️ websites and fake agents out there❌. Officially, there is no need to buy a ticket to visit here✅.

Adeeb K — Google review

One of the main attractions of phu*ket: the big Buddha. We came with a tour, so I don't know about the taxi. There are many people, the stairs are hot, but they are sprinkled with water to cool down, no monkeys, there are people who sit in places where there may be monkeys and there are warning signs. For 150 baht you can buy a golden heart and write your spiritual desire on it. The view should be good, but we didn't get it because of the haze

Анна Д — Google review

Must see place with beautiful views. No entrance fee- they should introduce one. We enjoyed our visit. Some irresponsible behaviour from visitor speaking Russian, who gave co*ke to the wild monkey just to have a laugh and take a video, disregarding sign not to feed the monkeys.

Urszula J — Google review

beautiful architecture. There is a parking area with many cool shade trees. Big, kind, cute Buddha statue. Located on a high mountain, the path up has many steep and somewhat dangerous slopes.

Hiếu P — Google review

The place was so calming. Away from the city’s hustle and bustle, you can go to the big Buddha, phu*ket to relax, get good energy, enjoy the scenic view from the top of the hill. Do be careful about the monkeys there if you’re planning to sit and eat (they can smell food and come to snatch it from you 😝)

Safalya S — Google review

The Big Buddha was magnificent. It is free to enter if you want to or you can do other activities and they will take you up here. We did atv to Big Buddha, which was so much fun. They brought us up here and took us back to camp on the bottom. The views from up here overlooking the city are incredible. Be careful getting close to the monkeys they can be aggressive. Do not bother them, and they won't bother you. Go up and enjoy the views and see the statue.

Ngawang S — Google review

Free visit, all they ask is you respect their religion by covering from shoulders to knee's or just above. And now hats... not a big price to pay. You can climb to the top and walk around the big Buddha. And there's a few other small events also going on. One guy was doing 7 minutes of meditation, and there's a monk downstairs blessing people. Unfortunately, this costs, and there's no sign telling you so. Religion seems to come at a price with him. But for most of the location it is a wonderful visit with a couple of small shops where you can get refreshments and souvenirs. Oh, and there are wild monkeys. Don't wind them up, or tease them with food, because they will take it from you. And by whatever means necessary.

Marcus B — Google review

If you are from the Western world, you definitely want to visit this place. It is open to the public, no fees or tickets. Beautiful view of the city… and as a bonus you can see some monkeys in the back.

Anderson N — Google review

As suggested by the name this is in fact a very big Buddha. I venture to suggest that in fact there is no bigger Buddha on the island. It’s size is impressive and the respectful way in which most visitors participate in the activities is better than I have seen in other places.Beware the monkeys. If you carry food or drink they will steal it.
