How does the immaculate grid work? ›

Each of the grid's three rows and columns corresponds to a professional team, statistical achievement, or award, and players must fill each square by selecting an athlete who meets both criteria.

There is a new grid every day at 6:00am ET. A player cannot be used twice. Players may be active or inactive. For team and team cell: player must have played at least one game (in the regular season or postseason) for both teams.

UPDATED: July 11, 2023 at 5:31 p.m. The Immaculate Grid, the baseball trivia game that's become a viral sensation among sports fans this summer now has a new owner. Sports Reference LLC acquired the game, the company announced on Tuesday.

“People are playing this game in so many ways and, quite frankly, I think that's one of the reasons it's been so successful,” said Adam Darowski, director of product for Sports Reference, which recently acquired the grid and publishes one daily for baseball, men's basketball, football and hockey.

It consists of nine squares with team logos and statistical categories running along the top and left side. Users then have nine guesses to name players who fit the criteria of each cell. Ostensibly, the goal is simply to fill the grid.
